Message from the president

“The Philippine Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion turns 60 in 2020!

After six decades of existence, the Philippine Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (PSHBT) has witnessed the evolution of hematology and blood transfusion services in the country.

It has weaved itself in the historical fabric of our nationhood as part of the medical community serving people with hematologic diseases and those requiring blood transfusion through training, education, research and community extension services.

The PSHBT’s history is likewise rich with pages of challenges and conquests. From its beginning in 1960 it has moved with time adapting to the changes brought forth by a swiftly changing healthcare landscape.

Today, as in the past, the PSHBT is again bracing itself to face the uncertainties of what lies ahead firmly believing that it can draw strength from the unity, solidarity and camaraderie of its membership.

The pandemic brought about by COVID-19 infection has obviously changed the world in ways both good and bad.

The beauty of digital technology and the virtual world it has created allowed greater access to individuals, institutions and information.

It has shattered barriers of space and limitations of physical contact. It has redefined how communication can be done. It has reinvented how the transfer of scientific messages can be efficiently and swiftly conducted. Simply put, the challenges brought about by the pandemic has unearthed the rediscovery of information of technology as an indispensable tool for the continuation of medical learning and education in hematology and transfusion medicine.

It is in this “virtual realm” that the PSHBT must now revisit its identity and strategy to make the itself relevant and productive in these unfolding times.

It is towards this direction, that the PSHBT will hold for the very first time and in the occasion of its 50th offering an annual convention using a virtual platform. It is the PSHBT’s attempt to continue excellence in scientific education through a tool that opens it to every interested health professional all over the world.

Allow me to thank in behalf of the Regents and Members of the PSHBT the “new” breed of hematology leaders who courageously took the challenge to bring this into fruition, The PSHBT is proud of its next generation leaders who imbued with the passion and motivation of our predecessors have now taken the lead to chart a promising and re-assuring future for the PSHBT.

Cheers to our 60th year!”
